A chronic microelectrode investigation of the tonotopic organization of human auditory cortex.

چکیده
We investigated the functional organization of human auditory cortex using a new chronic microelectrode technique. Tonotopic mapping data was obtained at the single unit level for the first time in humans. All sound-driven units were noted to have frequency-dependent response patterns. The majority of units (73%) demonstrated sharply tuned excitatory best-frequency responses. Twenty seven percent of units showed wide receptive fields, representing excitatory responses to almost the entire range of frequencies presented. A tonotopic pattern was observed with best frequencies systematically increasing as more medial-caudal recording sites were sampled.

Fine functional organization of auditory cortex revealed by Fourier optical imaging.
We provide an overall view of the functional tonotopic organization of the auditory cortex in the rat. We apply a recently developed technique for acquiring intrinsic signal optical maps, Fourier imaging, in the rat auditory cortex. These highly detailed maps, derived in a several-minute-long recording procedure, delineate multiple auditory cortical areas and demonstrate their shapes, sizes, an...
متن کاملMultiscale Optical Ca2+ Imaging of Tonal Organization in Mouse Auditory Cortex
Spatial patterns of functional organization, resolved by microelectrode mapping, comprise a core principle of sensory cortices. In auditory cortex, however, recent two-photon Ca2+ imaging challenges this precept, as the traditional tonotopic arrangement appears weakly organized at the level of individual neurons. To resolve this fundamental ambiguity about the organization of auditory cortex, w...
متن کاملLack of tonotopic organization of the auditory cortex in schizophrenia
Background: Disorganization of tonotopy in the auditory cortex has been described in schizophrenia. Subjects with schizophrenia show little to no spatial organization of responses to different tone frequencies in the auditory cortex. Previous studies have called into question the use of MEG and the M100 response to assess tonotopy. This study seeks to replicate prior results of tonotopic disorg...
متن کاملFrequency-dependent responses exhibited by multiple regions in human auditory cortex.
Recordings in experimental animals have detailed the tonotopic organization of auditory cortex, including the presence of multiple tonotopic maps. In contrast, relatively little is known about tonotopy within human auditory cortex, for which even the number and location of tonotopic maps remains unclear. The present study begins to develop a more complete picture of cortical tonotopic organizat...
